Katie: Featured Chimpanzee Artist of the Day! #apesthatpaint

Katie was born February 5, 1995

Katie arrived at the Center for Great Apes in April of 2013 after spending the first 18 years of her life in a tiny indoor cage in a New Jersey home where she was kept as a pet. When she was rescued, Katie was almost completely bald on her back and legs due to a very poor diet, but with the proper nutrition of fresh fruits and vegetables at the Center (and with the help of Florida’s heat and humidity), Katie’s hair has begun to grow.

Her diet in New Jersey consisted mostly of mushroom soup, Jell-O, pudding, jelly doughnuts, oatmeal, candy, and hot tea. When she started trying different fruits and vegetables at the Center, she would take tiny little bites- so small there was no way she could determine what it tasted like- but she would try everything. Today, Katie is on a nutritious diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-packed primate biscuits.

Katie lived most of her life in a tiny indoor cage as a pet.  Today at the sanctuary, she has a very large 40-foot tall habitat with grass and natural ground. However, Katie is still afraid to walk on the grass or hay and will not climb the ladders and jungle gyms in her habitat.   She stays mostly in the chutes or on the sidewalk of her domes.  It may take her years to gain the confidence to climb and explore her new home.

Despite living with a human family and not other chimpanzees, Katie showed remarkable bravery in meeting her first chimpanzee friends at the sanctuary- Murray, Mowgli, and Clyde. When she had a “howdy” meeting with Murray, he was very sweet with her and invited her to groom him through the mesh of the “howdy” door. Katie gently touched him and both sat next to each other, calmly touching.

Today Katie lives in a group of chimpanzees who have a similar background as hers–Murray, Mickey, and Daisy.  Murray is her favorite chimpanzee now.

Diploma Framing

Most people are not aware of what it takes to frame a diploma, so we have decided to take some time to explain the different components of the framing process and how we come up with the pricing of each piece.

Let’s begin with the most basic framed diploma:  The most basic materials used in framing a diploma are the following:

  1. The Frame (AKA Moulding)
  2. The Mat
  3. The Glass

Pricing ranges from $39.00 and up.

Determining the price of a job is based on the following:

  1. What is the size of the diploma?  (in inches)
  2. Selecting the Frame:  sample-frames-small
    1. How thick do you want the frame?  1/4 in, 1/2 in, 1 in, etc.
    2. What color?
    3. What kind of frame?  wood, metal, plastic.
  3. Selecting the Mat:  (This is always recommended.  The mat puts some space between the ink of the diploma and the glass, and keeps it from sticking to the glass.)  mat-board-samples
    1. How many visible inches around the diploma?  1/4 in, 1/2 in, 1 in, etc. (Standard is 2 in.)
    2. Double or triple mat?
    3. What color?
    4. What kind of mat? Linen, acid free, leather, etc.
  4. Selecting the Glass:   glass-samples2
    1. Regular, conservation, plexi, non-glare, museum.

Other Samples of Diploma Frames:

Once all selections have been made, the price will be determined.  If you have selected items that are in stock at our workshop, the job can be done within 30 minutes.  If  you selected items that need to be ordered, it usually takes 3 to 4 days to finish the job.  Our staff will call you and let you know when you can pick it up.

From Swords to Frame: (A night’s and Frame Story)

This story begins with a collector looking for the best way to display and protect his prized possession.  The collector stopped by our shop and showed Adam (owner of the shop) the knights’ uniform.

After looking at different frames and matting the collector finally decided on the look that he wanted for his Knight’s uniforms.

Our experienced master framers took the items, with skill and care, they created a beautiful shadowbox to display and protect these beautiful pieces of history.

After the uniforms were in place, our master framers delivered the piece to the collector’s house and professionally hang the piece as if it was  museum artwork.

If you have any type of memorabilia (historic, sports, theatre etc.) in your closet, let us professionally frame it .
